Historie

North of this road the Oude Ae meanders, and in the bowl of such a meander the Grey Monks Monastery used to be located. Now nothing can be found of it, except for one farm named Grey Monks Monastery. The Cistercian Menterne monastery was founded in 1299. The name Grey Monks Monastery refers to the grey hoods worn by the monks. The monastery was a sister monastery to the much better-known monastery of Aduard. The monastery grounds were about 3 ha, and included a mill, a brick (tichel) factory, a forge, among other things. In 1569, the Sea Beggars set fire to and looted the monastery, after which the defenceless monks moved to Aduard. Eventually, the monastery was completely demolished in 1578. With aerial photographs and X-rays, the contours of the monastery can be recognised. During reconstruction work, archaeologists found old foundation walls and skeletons.
